Course Policies

Collaboration

Collaboration is strongly encouraged, both in this course and in the profession of computational linguistics. You may discuss the homework assignments and final project with anyone enrolled in this course at any time during the semester as long as you give them proper attribution, but you must ultimately complete and write up all assigned work for yourself. Specific instructions for giving attribution to your collaborators will be provided in each coursework item.

Academic Integrity

All BU students are expected to maintain high standards of academic honesty and integrity. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the CAS or GRS Academic Conduct Code, which describes the ethical standards to which BU students are expected to adhere and students’ rights and responsibilities as members of BU’s learning community. All instances of cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic misconduct will be addressed in accordance with this policy. Penalties for academic misconduct can range from failing an assignment or course to suspension or expulsion from the university.

Use of Generative AI Tools

Use of generative AI tools such as TerrierGPT to aid with coursework is permitted, as long as you provide a full transcript of all interactions (prompts and responses) between you and the generative AI tool in the form of a .pdf or .txt file. Specific instructions for this will be provided in each coursework item. Failure to provide proper attribution to generative AI tools, including failure to provide required documentation of generative AI interactions, may constitute plagiarism. Usage of generative AI tools is subject to applicable BU policies.

Respectful, Inclusive, and Productive Participation

The field of computational linguistics is a diverse, international community that benefits from incorporating a wide variety of different perspectives. All members of the course, both students and members of course staff, are expected to foster an inclusive and productive environment by treating one another with civility and respect. Prejudice and discrimination in any form on the basis of race, sex, age, religion, national origin, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, disability status, socio-economic status, or other forms of identity are strictly prohibited. All students are entitled to the proper usage of names and pronouns that they designate.

Religious Observance

BU policy permits members of any religious group to absent themselves from classes without penalty when required for compliance with their religious obligations. Please notify the course staff Sophie and/or Romi as soon as possible of any absences for religious observance.

Disability and Access

Students with documented disabilities, including learning disabilities, may be entitled to accommodations intended to ensure that they have integrated and equal access to the academic, social, cultural, and recreational programs the university offers. Accommodations may include, but are not limited to, additional time on tests, staggered homework assignments, note-taking assistance. If you believe you should receive accommodations, please contact the Office of Disability & Access Services to discuss your situation. This office can give you a letter that you can share with instructors of your classes outlining the accommodations you should receive. The letter will not contain any information about the reason for the accommodations.
